Frequently Asked Questions…

WHY SHOULD I ADOPT A DOG?

Adopting a dog is not just welcoming a pet into your home; it’s offering a furry friend a fresh start, a chance at a new beginning filled with love and care. By choosing to adopt a dog, you’re transforming a life, providing a second chapter full of joy, companionship, and the promise of a brighter future. Street dogs were born into the most unfortunate circumstances, but you can change the future of at least one by opening your heart and your home.

AM I READY FOR A DOG?

Getting a dog is a big – but exciting – decision. If you are ready to commit long term, can afford food, accessories and vet bills, and have a dog-shaped hole in your heart, then you might be ready! While every dog is different and has its own unique needs, there are some standard requirements for a lifetime of happiness, including a safe and secure home, time and space for daily exercise, regular and nutritious meals, and a commitment to any medical needs… and of course, a lot of love!

DO STREET DOGS ADJUST TO HOME LIFE?

Many of our street dogs adapt quickly and flourish in their new domestic setting. However, some street dogs have lived their entire lives in survival mode and don’t adjust well to the comforts of home life. The transition from self-reliance to domesticity can be gradual and requires patience, understanding and love.

ARE ADOPTED DOGS HEALTHY AND WELL-BEHAVED?

All of our dogs receive comprehensive veterinary checks and medical care to ensure they’re healthy and ready for their new home. All of our dogs are sterilized and vaccinated before they are rehomed.

WHY SHOULD I FOSTER A DOG?

Fostering a dog is more than providing temporary shelter; it’s granting our furry friends a vital opportunity to receive necessary medical treatments, healing, and abundant love while they patiently await their forever home. In the warmth of a foster home, these dogs experience the care and attention that sets the stage for their physical recovery and emotional well-being.

HOW LONG DO I NEED TO FOSTER A DOG?

We are looking to build a loyal community of short and long term foster families who can help us support more street dogs in Guatemala. Dogs recovering from being sterilized need to monitored for 8-10 days, while those with more serious medical conditions may need to be looked after for 2-3 months and more.

HELP, I'M NEW TO DOG PARENTING!

No worries! We provide guidance, tips, and support to make your transition into pet parenthood as smooth as possible.

WHAT IS YOUR FOSTER / ADOPTION PROCESS?

If you are looking to foster or adopt one of our dogs, please contact us as soon as possible. We will ask you to complete a short questionnaire which helps us understand your current living situation and lifestyle, as well as the type of dog you are looking for. We will review your questionnaire within 24 hours and get back to you. Before a dog is rehomed or placed into foster care, we will visit your home and meet you in person to go through the next steps and answer any questions you might have. If you are adopting a dog, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract.
